Many of the <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/16/buffett-berkshire-hathaway-q3-2009-holdings-a-to-f-brk-a-axp-bac-bdx-bni-kmx-ko-cmcsa-cdco-cop-cost-xom-etn/">Warren Buffett stocks</a> and <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/17/soros-fund-holdings/">George Soros stocks</a> were among the movers today. One issue affecting stocks ahead is that investors and traders alike are starting to figure out that cost cuts at the likes of what was seen over the last year cannot go on forever, and that benefits can only add so much. <br /><br />Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:<br /><br />Dow 10,423.81 +16.85 (0.16%) <br />S&amp;P 500 1,110.31 +1.01 (0.09%) <br />Nasdaq 2,203.78 +5.93 (0.27%)<br /><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/17/top-day-trader-alerts-nlst-spwra-spwrb-ngsx-psun-smtl-amat/">Top Day Trader Alerts</a><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/17/top-10-analyst-upgrades-downgrades-initiations-dvn-xom-hes-itw-lea-nflx-palm-pard-spwra-vrtx/">Top Analyst Upgrades/Downgrades</a><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/11/17/todays-best-market-rumors-11172009-palmtwx/">Top Stock/Market Rumors</a><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/17/closing-bell-moving-beyond-cost-cutting-xom-hd-spwra-smtl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Closing Bell: Moving beyond cost cutting (XOM, HD, SPWRA, SMTL, AMAT, PLA)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/17/closing-bell-moving-beyond-cost-cutting-xom-hd-spwra-smtl/">Closing Bell: Moving beyond cost cutting (XOM, HD, SPWRA, SMTL, AMAT, PLA)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. A report by <a href="http://www.pointcarbon.com/" target="_blank">Point Carbon</a>, an independent consulting company that tracks global carbon and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/energy/">energy</a> markets, estimates that U.S. climate legislation could push the price at the pump 13 cents a gallon higher. The increase would result from the cost to oil companies for carbon permits, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE5A157920091102" target="_blank">which they can pass along to consumers</a>. </p>
<span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"><script> digg_url = 'http://digg.com/environment/Climate_change_law_could_cost_13_cents_a_gallon'; </script> <script src=" http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span>
<p>This is a much rosier view than that of the oil industry, however, which believes a U.S. cap-and-trade system would thrash demand for <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/gasoline/">gasoline</a> and lead to the shuttering of many refineries.</p>

However, all bets are off before the U.S. releases third quarter gross domestic product that would give a better picture of the state of the U.S. economy and growth. The GDP data will no doubt affect investors' mood once released at 8:30 a.m., or an hour before the opening bell.<br /><br />[<strong>Update 9:00 a.m.</strong>: The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/10/29/gdp-report-expected-to-show-critical-shift-in-economic-growth/">economy grew at a 3.5% pace</a> in the third quarter, the best showing in two years, fueled by government-supported spending on cars and homes. Futures got a boost from the reading.]<br /><br />Economists expect GDP to have grown at a 3.2% annualized rate in the third quarter, according to Briefing.com after shrinking at an 0.7% annualized rate in the second quarter. If true, it would mean the economy is back on its feet after being knocked over by the worst recession since the 1930s. But many attribute the growth to government support programs such as cash for clunkers and mortgage modification and wonder what the fate of the economy be once gone.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/29/before-the-bell-stock-futures-higher-ahead-of-gdp-data/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Before the bell: Stock futures higher ahead of GDP data</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/29/before-the-bell-stock-futures-higher-ahead-of-gdp-data/">Before the bell: Stock futures higher ahead of GDP data</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 07:35:00 EST. <p>As the number of unemployed has climbed and the period of same has lengthened, many have wondered how business could be improving during a time when the consumer (those still left) has transformed from spender to saver.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/18/sunday-funnies-market-rising-in-spite-of-high-unemployment/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sunday Funnies: Market rising in spite of high unemployment </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/18/sunday-funnies-market-rising-in-spite-of-high-unemployment/">Sunday Funnies: Market rising in spite of high unemployment </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 18 Oct 2009 14:40:00 EST. Revised Buy/Stop Loss if you sold shares in this company: $78.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/25/short-city-update-exxon-mobil-hold-short-wal-mart-cover-shor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Short City Update: Exxon-Mobil: hold short; Wal-Mart: cover short</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/25/short-city-update-exxon-mobil-hold-short-wal-mart-cover-shor/">Short City Update: Exxon-Mobil: hold short; Wal-Mart: cover short</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 17:30:00 EST. It seems that regulation over non-financial firms being looser is a huge relief. Even a <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/07/30/weekly-jobless-claims-creep-back-up-toward-600k/">wider than expected</a> seasonal weekly jobless claims report did not hurt the market. Yesterday we had a potential huge technical event in oil prices, but the news today remedied that. Oil was up almost $4.00 at over $67.00 late in the day. We even had <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/07/30/two-ipos-hit-globe-specialty-metals-pennymac-gsmpmt/">two IPOs trading today</a>. <br /><br />Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:<br /><br />Dow 9,152.19 +81.47 (0.90%) <br />S&amp;P 500 986.40 +11.25 (1.15%) <br />Nasdaq 1,984.30 +16.54 (0.84%)<br /><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/07/30/analyst-upgrades-downgrades-in-tech-telecom-akam-driv-ifx-leap-pcs-netl-sap-tel/">Top Analyst Calls</a><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/30/closing-bell-a-1-000-sandp-scares-the-bears-amzn-xom-expe-ge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Closing Bell: A 1,000 S&amp;P scares the bears (AMZN, XOM, EXPE, GE, HOG, SYMC)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/30/closing-bell-a-1-000-sandp-scares-the-bears-amzn-xom-expe-ge/">Closing Bell: A 1,000 S&amp;P scares the bears (AMZN, XOM, EXPE, GE, HOG, SYMC)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 16:00:00 EST.
